Open Question: How to tell from peek hole my car air condition has excessive compressor oil?
Before took the gas out the peek hole is bright clear. After recharge is dark. moreResolved Question: Need help diagnosing a car problem with a 99 Ford Taurus?
For awhile now the Air Conditioning hasn't worked at all, but everything else did. Then recently when I was waiting in the drive through to Burger King, I felt the car shake violently three times with around 5 seconds in between each trembling, and then it started making strange noises. A bit later some white smoke started coming out of the left side of the front of the car under the hood. We put more oil and anti-freeze in it, and managed to drive it home without anymore smoking. Now it's drivable but there's a noise which sounds like "surging" or an engine running noisily (though I am not sure it is the engine). When the Defrost/heating is turned on however, it runs progressively worse, louder, and there's a bad smell. I have a feeling eventually it'd start to smoke again if we left it on while we drove. So while we CAN drive the car, it's nearly impossible to do so comfortably (and without the windows fogging up). I'm wondering what could be causing this problem and what should be done to fix it? My father's suggested that it might be the "compressor" whatever that is. I know next to nothing about cars. Thank you for your input. moreVoting Question: Which vehicles use an electric motor to drive the A/C system, Instead of by a belt / pulley from the engine?
Cars, trucks, or other. Interested in years 1959 to present. ~ REASON for my question: I asked this question on yahoo answers 5 months ago, and got an interesting answer: ~~~ My Question: Opinions please on Vehicle A/C: Are there any 4 cyl cars Or trucks that do Not bog down engine when A/C is on? This is something I would like to overcome by finding a 4 cylinder Car or Truck that will drive the same Or almost the same when you turn on the Air conditioning. I recently upgraded to a car with A/C, but when I turn on the A/C, the engine power seems to be cut by 50% and feels like car is straining to accelerate. It is a 2001 Cavalier 2.2 liter. 5 speed maual. Thanks. * 5 months ago ~~~ The interesting answer: Best Answer - Chosen by Voters Some modern vehicles use an electric motor to drive the A/C system while others are powered directly off the engine via a belt. If you are noticing a drag on the engine when turning on the A/C, you have a manually driven system. If you do not notice a drag or loss of fuel economy then you likely have an electrically driven system. Either way something powers a compressor motor. Burning fuel in the engine via a belt to the compressor or Burning fuel in the engine via a belt to the alternator generating electricity which then is available to a separate motor to run the compressor. * 5 months ago ~*~*~ (Now i would like some more info from you experts out there since i gave up on all my google searches which found nada.) Thank you !! moreResolved Question: Car air conditioning never stops working?
Here is my problem. I can't switch off my air con compressor. The compressor works all the time without switching itself off. Even though the button on the dashboard is in off position the compressor is working. The problem occur a few week ago. I had it "fixed" at Honda dealership - they say it had something to do with filters and other stuff. But after three week the problem is back. Here what happens - I start the car, the compressor is working and it is really have for the engine that it goes down to 300/400 rpm. Before, if I started the car with air off it would be OK. So if I started a car with air on the problem would be there but with air off the compressor would be working OK if turn on after a while. Now nothing helps, it is working all the time, to the extend that the pipes inside of the engine that lead from the compressor are covered with ice. Thanks for your help in advance, Martin Thanks for your answer. I do not have the hot air as I live in Thailand :) I will ask them to check the switch though. Thanks moreVoting Question: air condition freezing up when using the heater?
I've got an '86 F150. At least one of the vacuum motors was not holding a vacuum, so since I had to take the dash apart anyway, I replaced all three. Tha is all I did, nothing more. my just refuel my system with oil today , and when i went to turn on the heat , all i ear is the fan , now my compressor outside is spinning , and all i have coming in is cold air, i went to my thermostat fairly good one electronic with humidity sensor manuf by honeywell , when i activate heat on it, goes to a cycle says wait then after 30 sec it activate the fan and it goes to aux heat on , i asume emergency heat , it s 52 in the house 32 outside , and it s cold lol , i try to reset my fuse box but still do the same thing , i know that my oil furnace is in perfect condition and i wonder maybe could it be the burner who does not activate i dont know i am lost can someone light me up? moreResolved Question: Air condition cable?!?!?
My ac stopped working the other day and when we brought it to be looked at the mechanic said evaporator/compressor all fine freon is full but there may be a broken cable. It still blows and the rear ac blows cold its just the front one that doesn't cool. Is this major or minor anything else I may need to know? Are there any questions I need to ask? Is replacing the air conditioning compressor on a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder a tough job or is pretty much a bolt on bolt off operation? Anyone heard about air conditioning that works by heating the gas, which sends the gas circulating instead of using a compressor? How do they do it? Thanks a lot! Kevin moreResolved Question: My central heating & air unit is not working properly. What could be my problem?
I recently installed a new thermostat for my central heating & air system. While installing a new thermostat for the system, I accidentally crossed one of the connector wires with one of the other wires that connects to the thermostat and I damaged something in the air handler that controls the air coming in from the compressor or heat pump. Now I get continuous heat and no air conditioning at all. In order to get heat into my home, I have to flip the circuit breaker switch to turn it off and on. The thermostat has no control at all. I believe there is nothing wrong with my thermostat, rather there is something wrong with my air handler for the system. What could be my problem ? moreResolved Question: Refridgerator running, but not cold air. ?
Any thoughts as to what is causing this? I know a little about air conditioning and when the machine and fan are working but blowing room temp air, I would assume it's the compressor. But I don't know a lick about fridges or if they even have a compressor. What do you suppose is causing this? It was working perfectly fine this morning. The unit's only about 8 years old. Also, is this something I am able to fix on my own? Costs? Thanks. Yep, 1st thing we checked was the thermostat. We even turned it up (cooler) and still will not blow cool air. I already pulled it away from the walls. We're going to transfer everything to the other fridge and turn this one off for the night and plug it back in in the morning. moreVoting Question: What's wrong with my dad's truck?
My dad owns a GMC 4 x 4 pick-up truck with a v-8 motor and air. As he drives along, especially when he accelerates, there is a hissing sound. It's sounds like air escaping - same sound that you here when he opens the drain valve on his compressor. He had it in the shop twice and replaced the air conditioning belt and the fan belt but the hissing continues. It's really annoying expecially when he's driving through the neighbourhood and all the neighbours look when they here the sound. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: 1990 olds cutlass supreme ,air conditioning problem?

Here it goes. I'm a ME at a steam power plant. We have three NG boilers and many auxiliary equipment. Equipment like pumps, sample coolers, air compressors, air conditioning units, some forced draft fans, etc. All these components require cooling water to flow through them to operate properly. Currently, we take city water, pipe it to the components. The water cools the component as required but is then released to the city drain. The cooling water we released to the sewer is a significant cost. My boss has asked me to design and install a closed loop cooling system so the water is recovered and not wasted. She provided me with a large water chilling unit that will most likely cool the loop adequately. So the heat will enter the cooling loop from the cooled components and rejected out of the system thought the chiller. Question: I know the size of the supply lines currently installed for the once through system. ( 2", 1" 3/4" copper pipe etc.) Including the main header that crossed the entire power plant. My plan is to leave the supply lines installed to the components and just install a return header back to the chiller. Do I design the retire header and lines the same size of the supply lines or do I need another Calc? Does anyone know of a book that I can refer to for this type of design? Thanks! How will the water return to the chiller? I plan to connect a return line on the currently component drain line. In some cases that is difficult simply becasue of the position of the component relatie to the floor. Each eturn line will then connect to a common return header that returnes to the chiller. It seems to reason that the return lines and header would need to be able to handle the same mass flowrate as the supply and thus the same or similar size. The chiller cooles the water by a referigerant cycle. The freon (or what ever is the latest thing) has a very large heat exhange. Chiller rejects heat to air like a heat pump except with out the heating part. I'm not sure if there is a collectoin basin inside the chiller but I need to find out. I woud have to have some expansion mechanism for when the water heats up. Water also has an automatic water fill valve when water in the system is low. I will need to read the chiller manual closer. At times, the air will not come on. In cooler weather, about 70-80 degrees, I hear a ticking sound coming from the front console on the right side. When the car is at operating Temperature, it goes away. I think it is due to the tech piecing the wires that he checked to see if they are OK. It only ticks when it is cool about 70-80 degrees outside. Sometimes(here in Tx), When it get around 100degrees, the air works, other times it does not.Once it starts working, it continue to operate and it is comfortabel in the car. I had a slight leak at the base of the compressor. I had the tech put a stop leak in the system. Once it start working, it get cold in the car at 100+ degrees. I have a 2001 honda civic lx. I took it to a mechanic 2 months ago and had the system recharged. A few days ago, the cold air turned hot. I called the mechanic and he told me that it is probably the condenser or the compressor. Is there a way to check individual components of the a/c system to determine serviceability? My father has a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ-Rally Edition, with about 100,000 miles. It has been very reliable, but recently there has been an issue with the air conditioning. On very hot days, the A/C will be ice cold for a little while, then just seem to kick off and blow warm air. If it is switched off for a while, then switched back on, it will work again, or it will resolve itself after awhile if left on. On cooler days, the A/C seems to work fine. Until this summer, the A/C on the car has been flawless and amazingly cold and consistent. What could be causing this? He already had it recharged and is going to wait until next year to do any major repairs on the system. The mechanic thinks that the compressor might be overheating and seizing up, causing it to not work until it has cooled off. I think that it could also be caused by ice forming on the evaporator and hoses, and then once the ice dissipates, the A/C can run normally again. I've seen this problem on some other cars and window air conditioners. Any help or opinions would be very helpful. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Why does my Air Conditioning only work on fan speeds 1 and 4?

I have a 93' Buick Roadmaster. The airconditioning does not seem to blow but the compressor is clicking on when engine running, and the condensor ( I think it is called the condensor) is getting cold with water droplets forming around it Which usually means the air conditioning should be working. I already took out the blower and checked it, but it ran without a problem off of a 12V car battery. I am not sure but I think it could be in electronics somewhere due to the car being so old and having so many miles on the engine. (Lots of stop and go traffic, 173,000 miles worth.) And the blower that I checked was the one just above the floor of the passengers seat, incase there is another blower I am unaware of. None of the air conditioning vents are blowing at all. 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.7 When i bought the vehicle, the a/c system was never working. Replaced compressor (seized clutch), replaced accumulator, replaced orifice tube and leaked checked (none found). System was filled with proper amount of refrigerant. Recharged, but there is no flow. When Air Conditioning is turned on, compressor clutch kicks in. But the 'High Side' needle shoots right up, onwards to 400 lbs. As for the 'Low Side', manifold shows around 80 lbs. 'Low side' lines/hoses are not cold, and high side lines/hoses are hot. There is probably a clog somewhere. I tried blowing compressed air through the lines(not advisable), removed high and low side valves, and blew in through the high side. And air came out of the low side. Everything appears to be functioning the way it should be but, what else could it be? **I've already recharged the system 4-5 times, trying out different solutions but, no go. And also tried flipping the orifice around, but same thing. Blew air through the condenser and that's also good. yes, system was vacuumed prior to each recharge. what would flushing do? theres already air flow. the condenser is brand new also, which i forgot to mention. air blows right through it. with low side attached, blew in air through high side at condenser, and air flows out @ low side service port to the other poster. jumping the clutch keeps it on, and needle shoots onwards towards 500lbs. its takes only 5 secs, its NOT normal. using the a/c button to power on the system only stays on for a second. constantly on/off/on/off. nothing has shutoff valves on them. i was not the one that performed the a/c recharge, just the mechanic that installed the parts. But he knows what he is doing. He's been doing a/c jobs for my work for years. i was looking at a diagram of my a/c system and it doesn't seem....right. here it is: http://autorepair.about.com/library/pictures/illustrations/bl094lib.htm Number 32 is where the orifice sits. Right now, the High Pressure line is attached there which leads back to the compressor. and the other line from the condenser (top outlet) goes towards the evaporator. according to the photo, the routing is wrong. from my understanding, the flow of refrigerant: compressor > condenser > orifice > evaporator > accumulator, and back around to the compresser again. but right now for my vehicle its compressor > orifice tube > condenser > evaporator > accumulator, and back to compressor. would it be possible that the lines at the condenser are swapped around?? moreResolved Question: 2001 Ford Windstar Air Conditioning Problems
Hello, Our 2001 Ford Windstar is blowing warm air while the air conditioner is set to max cool. So, I bought a can of refrigerant from Wal-Mart that has a gauge attached to it. Problem is this, with the gauge attached and air set to max my compressor clutch engages for a only a few seconds. The gauge reads around 43-45 psi. EDIT: The clutch does engage and the fuses checked out fine so I'm not thinking electrical. My question would it be better to take it to a mechanic for them to look at it and let me know if the compressor is bad so that I can save the labor charge? moreVoting Question: Is there an AC without an air compressor? Portable AC
My dad is a trucker and his truck air conditioning is not working so he needs some type of AC that he will not need to install. The Kooleraire is not efficient and the portable air conditioners have their exhaust pipes that need to be installed through a window which is not really convinient. Is there an AC system that does not require any installation, i.e. without an air compressor? What is the best option to cool the sleeper? moreTop Air Conditioning Compressor Links
