Resolved Question: What's a good rugged looking vehicle that can tow a 5000 lb travel trailer and 2 canoes?
We want an SUV, price doesn't matter as my wife and I will probably buy used. And we live in Kent, Washington if that helps at all...Which I'm realizing now that it probably won't... moreResolved Question: BOATBUILDERS!!! Can you tell me some quick, easy, and cheap canoe/kayak/small boat designs I can try?
I'm in construction tech. And we have to build a project. And we have about 16 hours of building time. My family already has a jon boat, but I want something small that I can use a double paddle or a electric thrust motor with a shallow draft. And I got to be able to carry it without a trailer (probably on top of my car). A trailer or internal combustion engine would make this project expensive. I weigh about 250 pounds and will be using the boat for fishing. So add an extra 15 pounds of fishing gear. I know that seems like a lot of fishing gear, but I'm rounding up. I came up with a cajun pirogue and I'll just hack off the tip of the back. Put a half inch triangle of plywood there, so if I wanted to, later on I can mount an electric motor on it later. The problem is that a pirogue would be mostly made with glue and fiberglass tape. That's just an inconvience when compared to nails or screws. Anybody got any design suggestions. All I need is a name. Google can find me a design of it. Or an alternate plan to tackling a pirogue. IF ANYTHING Suggestions in the art of boatbuilding will be helpful. moreResolved Question: How can I survive with my dad?
My dad is a big time idiotic nutcase. He's a successful guy, college graduate and all that but I honest to God think he's mental. He's a scoutmaster so nearly all of his money goes toward scout equipment and activities. I have a sister who's in college and if he spent half the money he spends on scout equipment on her, she would be ok. Its the same with me and the rest of my family. he thinks he can do whatever he wants. whenever anyone wants to talk, he just says "Not now. Later." When my mom tries to talk to him, he says he's too busy. When asked when he'll have the time to talk, he says "when I'm done" which is never because he's always doing another project that only he is interested in. He has also totalled our house. He took all the doors off the rooms and replaced them with pull-up bars because he says it'll help him and us stay in shape. He's got a treadmill in our living room! it might be ok except it looks like crap. its about 20 years old, rusty, dusty, stained, the stuff's coming off the handle. it always leaves dirt on the floor too. he's got a solar heater in our living room too. we never use the damn thing and will never have to either. it's also got paint peeling, duck tape holdin the panels together and it looks like shit. our backyard is full of canoes and kayaks for his scouts. he keeps a big, white trailer back there too. he has a big, red van/bus that i am forced to ride to skool in because he wont let me drive even though i got a license. it hasnt been cleaned in years and its got only hell knows what in it. i dont dare bring any friends or girlfriends over to the house but it doesnt matter because he'd never let me anyway. he said i cant have a girlfriend because he didnt. our whole family suffers because of him. please help moreVoting Question: Own a 16 ft Mohawk Canoe and am about to purchase a 17' boat trailer for it . Does Law require a Tag?
Is a License Tag required? It will sit low and car tail lights and turn signals will be seen. Trailer does have lights. Want to know if the Law requires a trailer tag in Florida. moreResolved Question: Can a regular boat trailer be used for a canoe?
I am looking for a way to transport a canoe and put it in water in the easiest way possible (as the kids are too young to help lift). I was thinking that a (cheaper) regular boat trailer might be modified with some tires to work for a canoe so I can use a boat ramp. Anyone? moreResolved Question: A scout's letter home?
Dear Mum and Dad, Our Scoutmaster told us to write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and are worried. We are okay. Only one of our tents and two sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Adam when it happened. Oh yes, please call Adam's mother and tell her he is okay. He can't write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search and rescue jeeps. It was great. We never would have found Adam in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Keith got mad at Adam for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Adam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas will blow up? The wet wood didn't burn, but one of the tents did and also some of our clothes. Jimmy is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Keith gets the bus fixed. It wasn't his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked okay when we left. Scoutmaster Keith said that with a bus that old you have to expect something to break down; that's probably why he can't get insurance. We think it's a great bus. He doesn't care if we get it dirty and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the bumpers. It gets pretty hot with 45 people in a bus made for 24. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the traffic policeman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Keith is a great bloke. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Jessie how to drive on the mountain roads where there aren't any cops. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out to the rapids. Scoutmaster Keith wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Adam was afraid he would sink because of his cast, it's concrete because we didn't have any plaster, so he let us take the canoe out. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Keith isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the bus so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Andrew dived into the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Steven and I threw up, but Scoutmaster Keith said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with food they ate in prison. I'm so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. By the way, what is a pedal-file? I have to go now. We are going to town to mail our letters and buy some more beer and ammo. Don't worry about anything. We are fine and tonight it's my turn to sleep in the Scoutmaster's tent. Love, Matthew moreVoting Question: Trailer hitch on a 2008 Dodge Caravan?
I have a 2008 Dodge Caravan SXT. I would like to add a trailer hitch to pull my small, canoe trailer. I do not want one that is HUGE and sticks out over the bumber fascia much, and would like a more streamlined one that would do the job. Any recommendations? moreResolved Question: want to buy a 02-03 Dodge ram 4x4?
ok i was looking at gitting a dodge ram 1500 SLT quad cab with 4x4, i live in iowa and would use the truck (off roading, hauling ,puling a small canoe trailer) but mostly driving like on the highway and a bit in town what would be better the 4.7 leter or the 5.7 leter Hemi, i know its a truck and MPG will suck but what will be better for me Thanks ok well as far as power my dad has a 92 ford F250 running a 460 (7.5 leter) but i think i will go with the Hemi i guess that leaves me with a 2003 or newer moreResolved Question: Bought an enclosed trailer and wonder how I can protect the floor underneath it as it's exposed plywood?
The new enclosed trailer I bought has 3/4" plywood I'm guessing for a floor and other then the black stain or protectant of some sort it is exposed underneath. Is this normal? Would a plastic coat spar varnish stick to it as it worked great on the outside of my fiberglass coated canoe? Would plain fiberglass resin sprayed on be a good idea? Or should it be left this way. I do plan on putting a coat of spar varnish on the floor inside for sure. Thanks for any suggestions. moreResolved Question: Places to stay/ things to do between Texas and Pennsylvania?
Beginning to plan a two week trip from Houston to Gettysburg and back, in September. Anybody have any must do/must see things and great places to camp (with a travel trailer) along the way. We really like to hike/canoe/fish, visit bakeries, National Parks, and any and all historical battlefields (especially Civil War). We've seen several caverns, also like off the beaten path things. Thanks in advance for all the suggestions. moreResolved Question: Have you read Bobby's letter to his mum?
Our scout master told us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Sam when it happened. Oh yes, please call Sam's mother and tell her he is OK. He can't write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search & rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Jones got mad at Sam for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Sam said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn't hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet wood still didn't burn, but one of our tents did. Also some of our clothes. John is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Jones gets the car fixed. It wasn't his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Jones said that a car that old you have to expect something to break down; that's probably why he can't get insurance on it. We think it's a neat car. He doesn't care if we get it dirty, and if it's hot, sometimes he lets us ride on the tailgate. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Jones is a neat guy. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Billy how to drive. But he only lets him drive on the mountain roads where there isn't any traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Jones wouldn't let me because I can't swim and Sam was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Jones isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Also Josh and I threw up. i seen these systems that have these foam blocks, and those ratchet straps. do you know if this would work fine? i cant afford a $800 trailer plus getting a hitch too. any idea on how much it would cost to get the dealer to install roof racks? what would be the fasted and most EFFECTIVE and non damaging to my vehicle way to get this canoe? THANKS IN ADVANCE! I would personally need to take down the ceiling of my new car and drill holes in it, to put up a roof rack myself, ok no way. I would pay a dealer first, for sure. and I have never seen a trailer for $150 that could tow a 16foot canoe, i have seen and shopped around for a canoe trailer that was hundreds of dollars, so i am not sure of what kind of trailer you would be refering to that only costs $100. one of wheelbarrow tires and plywood? moreResolved Question: Jimmy's letter from camp?

I'm looking to get away on an adventure trip but would like suggestions. My criteria: I would like it to include something physical like hiking, backpacking, canoeing, canyoneering whitewater rafting etc. I would like it to be relatively close by (within 10 hours of Tucson Arizona), affordable ($1000 tops) and doable over a weekend (no longer than 4 days). I have a camper trailer and I'm willing to tent camp which can keep costs at a minimum if needed. moreResolved Question: Where can I find free canoe trailer plans?
