Resolved Question: Solar powered water well for agricultural use?

We are looking for a Solar Energy based solution for agricultural farms for water pumping from well. Our scenario and requirements are as under: Water Table depth is between 300 to 400 feet. Lot of sunlight is available all year round. In summers the average day time temperature is about 50 C . In winters the night time lowest temperature is upto -3 C . There is no snowfall in our area in past 100 years history. Currently we already have electricity run tubewells, some having Centrifugal pumps, whereas soe have turbines , both kinds coupled with electric run motors , with average capacity of 25 HP. Our requirement is water output pipe with diameter of 6 inches. As we irrigate the lands in day time only, so we will not be requiring batteries for use of water well at night.  more

Voting Question: Home sprinkler system water pump "zone valve" question:?

I have a 1-1/2 HP self-priming centrifugal water pump for lawn sprinkling. A timer mounted in my garage can be set to operate it automatically or manually. When I manually switch the timer on, the front yard can be watered. After 1/2 hour I switch it off for a few seconds then back on again to water the back yard. My question is: What kind of "zone valve" do I have that switches zones (front yard to back) simply by shutting off the pump momentarily and back on again? There are no wires attached to the valve housing which is located on the discharge pipe from the pump. I need to replace it, but I do not know what this type of valve is called to search for a replacement online. Any plumbing geniuses out there? Thanks! Remember, there is a single valve. No switches or electrical connections to the valve. Changes in water pressure cause the valve to direct the water from one zone to the other. This is not a solenoid type valve. End switches do not start the pump. An electrical switch starts and turns off the pump. The pump operates independently from the valve that directs the flow of water from the front to the back yard.  more

Resolved Question: power voltage and current relationship for an induction motor connected to , say, a centrifugal pump?

It is said that when a induction motor is started direct on line, it'll generate a high torque, which will lead to it accelerating in uncontrolably. what is meant by " GENERATE A HIGH TORQUE" ? bcoz torque is force * shaft radius and radius is fixed, this means high tangential force on the motor shaft, how does this increase within the motor as the load on the motor increases? It is also said that, then the network has to supply a large inrush current, a very high initial level to establish flux in the motor. where does this sudden supply of current i.e. electrons come from? I have this doubt bcoz, the supply voltage is fixed, say through the socket in the wall or is it?. why and where does this sudden surge of current come from. If u find this question silly please suggest some websites which can clarify my silly doubts. thank you in advance.  more

Resolved Question: a pipe with a reduction in cross section?

if i consider a pipe with reduction in cross section, say from D1 to D2 the flow is blocked. does the pressure increase at the section where there is reduction i.e. in the pipe of dia D1. I know the pressure drops in the pipe of smaller dia i.e. D2. If the pressure does not increase, and if the pipe is on the discharge side of a centrifugal pump why does the discharge from the pump reduce. This question came to my mind when thinking about operation of a valve. As a valve closes I am told the discharge from the pump to which the pipe is connected, also decreases. this can happen only if the system resistance increases. why does the pump discharge reduce? i know the pressure drops in the valve and does not recover at the discharge side even if the dia is the same due to turbulance in the exit side of valve.  more
