Resolved Question: what's wrong with my chainsaw?

I inherited an old chainsaw-- didn't come with an instruction manual, or anything-- and I know next to nothing about chainsaws. It usually starts up very easily. Seems to idle normally, the chain moves around when you pull the trigger... but after it's been running for about a minute, the engine shuts off, or threatens to shut off, as soon as I actually cut anything with it. If I release the trigger and let it idle again, it won't shut off, but if i keep trying to cut with it for more than a couple seconds at a time... poof, it stops. Anyone know what this is a symptom of? and how to solve it? any advice would be appreciated. thanx. more

I just got a used Echo 500vl chainsaw. I don't know much about chainsaws and paid $50 for it. It starts and stays running but the chain will continue to spin while the saw is idling. Isn't it supposed to stop spinning? Did I get ripped off? Edit to add: Went back and got $15 back. So $35 for the saw in the end. I figure I can take it somewhere and get it fixed. I'm selling my bike because i havent used it in like 4 months and i'm just using space... I want to get rid of it and im moving so i need it done soon... My dad cuts alot of wood because he has a wood stove which heats his entire house. I have NO idea what to get him for his birthday and i got less than a month. Maybe something for cutting wood? He said he doesnt like chainsaws because you have to sharpen the chain often or buy new ones. He doesnt like an axe because he has carpal tunnel and who likes swinging an axe cutting wood for 3 hours straight? He said he loves his sawzall because its real easy cutting wood and u dont have to sharpen the blade every hour. Is there anything better than that? Because he has carpal tunnel, it sometimes puts a strain on his wrist with all the vibration from the sawzall. What can i get him? Any reccommendations with personal experience would be great! I took the chain off and had it sharpened after I purchaced it (used). It runs good but after the first cut it dulls itself and it never really throws the chunks that I am used to. The shop said the chain looked good. The RPMs seem ok. And yes the chain is on the correct direction. I checked it with a electric pole saw I just bought to make sure. Any clues? more
