I live in Portland, OR. When I hear statistics that one third of Americans are obese and more than half are overweight, I can't believe it. And I find it even harder to believe that there's a fair percentage of obese and overweight children and teens in America too. Why do I find these statistics hard to believe? Because when I look around my city, I hardly ever see an obese person and occasionally see an overweight one, and it's the same with the kids. In my school, there might be a few overweight kids and one or two obese kids. What I see doesn't line up with the statistics I keep seeing and hearing about! And people here eat their share of fast food and junk food (especially with my school's off campus lunch). But then, when I travel to other places (especially the southern United States and the mid-western United States) I can see that there's a lot more obese people there. It's kinda gross, 'cause I'm not used to seeing people so... fat! How come people from where I'm from and other places aren't incredibly fat like statistics say but in other parts of America there are people that line up exactly with what the statistics say? Even if we do consume fast food and junk food, why are we skinny and other people so gosh darn big? And why don't people just notice when they're getting fat and do somethin about it (it's not that hard...)? Thank you! Serious answers please. moreVoting Question: College Essay Suggestions?
I looked at everyone staring at me and felt tears riding the waves up my body. I did my best to restrain the tears trying to escape from my eyes but I couldn’t. I stared right into my mother’s eyes and the tears came crashing out. This is when I realized the trouble she has been through to give me the opportunities that I have today. I was 15 and I was just starting to understand what my mother has to do to keep my two sisters and I afloat. Now at 17 with six months left until I head off to college my mother has been that key that I’ve needed to unlock that door that’s been blocking my opportunities. She was 19, in love, and pregnant with me. They never planned to have a child just yet but they weren’t really trying to avoid it either. Both my mother and father being from two different families, it was improbable these two would end up together. One, my father, came from a pretty stable family. He graduated high school and could have gone to college if he were to choose. Two, my mother, came from a tough childhood having to fend for her self most days while my grandmother would have other relations. They had one thing in common; they were in love. And both were very dedicated to create a better life for their children. “We worked fours job even though we could have lived off two, we both decided that we wanted your life to be ten times better than ours.” My mother makes me want to work hard and make sure I get the life I deserve. “You know that I never had a chance to get an education, you should feel lucky. I never had a chance and you know I would take it if I could.” My mother would always tell me stories about her childhood and how horrible it was. “I never knew where I was going to sleep, I never had a real home, I had to work or myself.” Listening to her describe her experiences in her English-Vietnamese accent, I was mesmerized and just wanted to know everything. She had no friends and was bullied because she was half-white and that was considered being and outcast and you weren’t normal. She couldn’t go to school because she had to work to get shelter, food, and water. Her mother was not empathic of my mothers well being. My mother makes me want to be alive and live. Screaming, yelling, thumps, and door slamming. These are some of the sounds I’ve heard throughout my childhood. At the young age of six I would hear my parents argue all the time but they would always make up and pretend nothing ever happened. I remember so vividly one night they were arguing and it was 3 am and I awoke to thumps and yelling. “Why are you so angry?” “What you did was wrong.” “I didn’t do anything.” “I hate you.” I remember hearing books thrown across the room. I heard lamps fallen and broken into thousands of pieces. I heard rage of emotions, and cracked voices. I was scared. I did what I knew best; curl up and cover my ears and pretend nothing was happening. And as abruptly as it happened, I fell asleep just as fast. In the morning I looked at my puffy eyed mom, and there was nothing to say, and in that moment there wasn’t a need for words. She knew, I knew it. We loved each other. My mother makes me want to be a strong person who can persevere through any obstacles. This relationship would roller coaster for six to seven years. Until more than a year ago my mother decided enough with the physical and verbal abuse and kicked him out for good. It’s been more than a year since I’ve last seen my father, but really it’s been one year that I haven’t really missed him. He wasn’t there for my elementary graduation, middle school graduation, and most likely won’t be there for my most important day of my life; my high school graduation. But that’s okay with me, because seeing my mother evolve into the person she is today and with all the struggles she had to go through just makes me strong. My mother makes me want to do something for the world. My mother typical day is waking up at 5:30am, make lunch, and coffee. She drives to South Portland to her job at Nichols Parker, a car part manufacturer. Her job title is a Machinist Operator, and she exceeds in her job monthly. She stands on her feet 12 hours a day and in the summer has to endure 110 degree heat. She comes home at 6:14 pm exactly everyday and cooks us supper, then showers. Once she showers she lays in her bed in our living room and watches Vietnamese movies and falls asleep. To do it over again the next day. And her one day off on Saturday, she likes to lay down and relax. To do it over again on Sunday. My mothers makes me want to have an easy life, but I have to work for it. I’ve been living an easy life for a really long time now. But not any of the things I have today would’ve been if it weren’t for the support of my mother. She is the most strong-hearted person I know. With her abusive childhood, abusive marriage, raising three kids on her own, and working 70 hours a week. She has done and sacrificed so much so my two sisters and I can have the (cont..) best possible life we can live. And she does it everyday, which makes me admire her so much. She tells me everyday, “As long as you get your education, I will work 100 hours for you guys.” It’s because of her I have a computer, that I have a car, that I have clothes on my back, and a home to come back to every single night. It’s because of her I want to become a better person with each passing day. And it’s because of her that I will make a name for myself. It’s because of her that I believe I can make a difference. moreResolved Question: What are some good ideas for a lunch date in Portland, Oregon?

Where can I live car-free in America in a city that's not too big, hot, or expensive - near the sea? I'm spoiled because I've lived abroad in countries where you don't need a car to get by. I'm used to being able to pop down to the shop to buy a newspaper, walk to work, eat my lunch by the waterfront... you get the picture. Due to my work situation (lack there of) I am having to resign myself that I might not be able to move abroad again any time soon. I hate my lifestyle here in America (I live in midwest suburbia) - but there's got to be somewhere in this country I can have the car-free lifestyle I want - I just don't know where. I just worry that the only place you can live and thrive without a car by the coast is either a giant city or a really expensive area. Portland is supposed to be great, but to be honest a place like Salem appeals to me more. Can anybody suggest a car-free coastal wonderland, or am I doomed to a life trapped behind the wheel? moreResolved Question: Great Portland Oregon area restraunts???
